how the boat came in to the gap

Arie Evergoen from Oudekerk a/d IJssel has with Cor Heuvelman in contract of mayor Vogelaar a long boat of 18 meters fern cross the gap to bridge the gap. A big disaster has been stopped.

The wind came out of the dike. So Evergroen fern the head of the ship in the dike. A rope that was thrown from the foredeck to the people on the dike with the rope the head of the ship could hold. Then swings back of the ship in the hole. The ship closed the gap like a lock against the side and sucked itself trough the strong flow in to the gap. Heuvelman and Evergroen jumps in a rowing boat before the blow, but they need to go back to turn the engine off because the propeller of the engine was demolitioning the dike. At the same moment the people on the dike where throwing sandbags around the ship.

The Netherlands is under the sea and need to protect itself against the water. We use dikes and locks to stop the water. But in 1953 went it wrong. The dikes were too weak and to low. But now the dikes are higher and stronger and hold the water out of the land.

Water emergency disaster

the Netherlands protect them self for the water for centuries. to stop the water they build  mounds, dikes, windmills, locks, and floods. During the 2nd world war the expensive waterworks were often neglected. That was very risky. There was no money during the 2nd world war and the years after. In February 1953 took place a disaster by a rare combination of spring and one north westerstorm hurricane force. This storm destroyed the dykes of Zeeland and the South HollandIslands and drowned in the night of January 31 to February 1 more than eighteen hundred people, thousands of livestock and 150,000 hectares of land was under water. The schock was big, as a flood disaster with  so many deaths in the Netherlands was already very long ago.

E-twinning polder and flood disaster in Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel.

This image is made by a man: Roel Bendijk. This bronze image is revealed in 1983. The image commemorates as at the flood disaster of 1953. In the night of 1 February it happens. Some children from 16 are in a disco. They were happy, because they could not and might not to go home, because the weather was very bad. And the weather was bad!! On many places water is fold over the dikes. Large pieces dike flow away. A big piece of Zuid-Holland, Zeeland and Noord-Brabant standing under water: Many people are surprised because this happens at night. The mayor picks up the children from the disco, they has to help with: putting bags of sand in the holes. It did not help. On 5.30 there hit a hole from 15 m in the dike. The mayor used a ship that lay nearby. The ship was from 2 brothers from the family Evegroen. The ship was putting in the hole like this:
If he hadn’t do that, Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel was just one big sea.

The polders in Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel.

A polder is an area that lower is then the surrounding water. These polders become continuous dry held with polder pumping-engine. A system of small waterways and lager breasts bring water to the pumping-engine. This machine brings water back in the rivers so it drained to the sea. Because the soil of many of these polders centimetres per year fell by inklinking to get peat, South Holland is working to adapt the water. Inside the polders is the water system divided in compartments with any own water level. Higher located bosoms – wherein water collected – between polder quaysides. Province South-Holland has a supervisory task, the primary responsibility are the water boards.
