between Nieuwerkerk a/d IJssel and Capelle a/d IJssel is the recreationarea hitland. The 250 ha hitland area has different landscapes: forest, swamp landscape, peat meadow and grassland. in the area are also a few specific things from the past to be found, such as peat wells, wheels and lootjes drainage from the old mountain.

 

 

 

In the 19e century drew stone- and baking pan herself along the Dutch IJssel. One of the baking stones was established on the outskirts of north hitland bottom of the ijssel dike. These brickwork was to the dike, so the stones easily across the water can transported. The factory consisted out four ovens, which now only one look good. This is namely the only oven which is restored. The other three will be costly probably not be restored. The stones who in the ovens be makes, are known about the ijsselstones, flat, yellow stones who now in some house to be found. It baking of this stones was heavy work and woman and children did it to. The clay those necessary was to baking the stones was with cars –draw by Shetland ponies- to the ovens were brought. WHEELS

 

On Hitland-Norht are two wheels. This wheels lay against the IJsseldijk. The wheels are little ponds, generated during one of the previous floods of the IJssel. On this deliberate flooding is staying on the water, that today the day has still present.
