The Dutch IJssel
The Dutch IJssel was first a side river of the Lek. Since the block of the Dutch IJssel is it only filled by rainwater and water from canals.
During the flood at 1 February 1953 was there a hole of fourteen metres in the dyke nearby Nieuwerkerk a/d IJssel. On warrant of the mayor Vogelaar was the ship De Twee Gebroeders (eighteen metres long) of river skipper Arie Evegroen, navigating into the dyke. Together with his servant Cor Heuvelman. They have closed the dyke and for that they have received a prize.
